"CS408 Current Final Term Paper Spring 2022"

Subjective:

Question 1:
What is “About Box” and why it is used?

SOL:

The About box is a single dialog box that by convention identifies the program to the user. The About box is also used as the program's credit screen, identifying the people who created it. It is used rarely tells the user much about the program. On the Macintosh, the About box can be summoned from the top of the Apple pop-up menu. In Windows, it is almost always found at the bottom of the Help menu. Microsoft has been consistent with About boxes in its programs, and it has taken a simple approach to its design. Microsoft uses the About box almost exclusively as a place for identification, a sort of driver's license for the software.

Question 2:
Suppose you are a practitioner of visual art and visual design. Justify how visual art is different from visual design?

SOL:

Practitioners of visual art and practitioners of visual design share a visual medium. Each must be skilled and knowledgeable about that medium, but there the similarity ends. The goal of the artist is to produce an observable artifact that provokes an aesthetic response. Art is thus a means of self-expression on topics of emotional or intellectual concern to the artist, and sometimes, to society at large. Few constraints are imposed on the artist; and the more singular and unique the product of the artist's exertions, the more highly it is valued. Designers, on the other hand, create artifacts that meet the goals of people other than themselves. Whereas the concern of contemporary artists is primarily an expression of ideas or emotions.

Question 3:
How prototype is very helpful for software designers in interacting with the users? Describe at least 5 points?

SOL:

A prototype is very helpful for software designers in interacting with the users because

The prototype is a limited representation of a design that allows users to interact with it and explore its suitability.

Prototypes answer questions and support designers in choosing between alternatives. Hence, they serve a variety of purposes.

Prototyping ensures that the end users constantly work with the system and provide feedback.

Low-fidelity prototyping is important in the early stages of development. These are useful because they tend to be simple, cheap, and quick to produce.

Question 4:
Consider the vertical scroll bar of a web browser or word processor. For each of Norman's principles listed below, give one way that the scrollbar uses the principle for effective design. Describe the interface model of the scroll bar in one sentence.

Affordance

Constraints

Mapping

Visibility

SOL:

As consider the vertical scroll bar of a web browser or word processor. According to Norman’s principles, we design the scrollbar using the principle for an effective design that users should see and do when carrying out their tasks using an interactive product. Here we briefly describe what is given:-

Affordance:
The system should speak the user's language, with words, phrases, and concepts familiar to the user, rather than system-oriented terms. Follow real-world conventions, making information appear in natural and logical order.

Constraints:
Users often choose system functions by mistake and need a marked 'emergency exit' to leave the unwanted state without having to go through an extended dialog. Support undo and redo.

Mapping:
Users should not have to wonder whether words, situations, or actions mean the same thing in different contexts. Follow platform conventions and accepted standards.

Visibility:
Always keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback within a reasonable time. For example, if a system operation will take some time, indicate how long and how much is complete.

Question 5:
Write down any five main points that should be remembered while conducting unstructured interviews?

SOL:

The main points to remember when conducting an unstructured interview are:
• Make sure you have an interview agenda that supports the study goals and questions (identified through the DECIDE framework).
• Be prepared to follow new lines of inquiry that contribute to your agenda.
• Pay attention to ethical issues, particularly the need to get informed consent.
• Work on gaining acceptance and putting the interviewees at ease. For example, dress as they do and take the time to learn about their world.
• Respond with sympathy if appropriate, but be careful not to put ideas into the heads of respondents.
• Always indicate to the interviewee the beginning and end of the interview session.
• Start to order and analyze your data as soon as possible after the interview.
